Gender Selection

What is Gender Selection?

Also known as gender determination, gender selection is a medical technique which allows the parents to select the gender of their baby. In this technique, only the embryos with the desired gender are transferred to the uterus. Thus, the family has the healthy baby with the gender determined by them.

There are several reasons to prefer gender selection but gender selection is also commonly used for gender-related diseases in the family.

The applicant couple does not need to already have a child. Some families might prefer gender in the first pregnancies. Even though there is no infertility history in the family, IVF treatment is to be implemented in the gender selection process. Thanks to the IVF treatment, the number of eggs which is normally 1 is increased and multiple eggs are formed. And the selection occurs among the embryos formed by these eggs.

In Gender Selection / Gender Determination, information is obtained about the sex and health of the baby because chromosomal genetic research is made on all embryos obtained from the couple. Thus, both health and gender of the baby is 99.9% warranted.

The applicant families’ having had children before is considered a factor that increases the pregnancy rate. Quite successful results are obtained with the gender selection treatment particularly in the young women. With the graphic which is prepared according to age, you can follow the pregnancy success (occurrence rate) expected from the gender selection treatment from our success rates section.

Why Gender Selection?

The couples prefer gender determination so as to help prevent severe genetic diseases and gender-specific chromosomal disorders. For example, some gender-related diseases that are hereditary from the mother will only affect male babies or female babies. In this case, selection of the opposite gender would prevent the disease before birth.

Another reason why gender selection is preferred is because the parents want to balance their families based on their own dreams. Some couples might be psychologically in need for a child with a specific gender. The desire to have a male baby through this method is particularly higher in Turkey and Arab countries due to social pressure.

For example, the couple could have been better prepared to raise a male child.

Patient’s Pretreatment and Follow-up in Gender Selection Treatment

Treatment Process of Gender Selection in Cyprus

In gender selection treatment, upon the completion of the woman’s pretreatment, the couple’s 1-week Cyprus trip is planned to start the treatment.

Nothing is made on the 1st day; the couple arrives 1 day before the process. Airport-Hotel transfer is made and the couple will take a rest. Hunger is needed after 00:00 a.m. for the egg collection process to be made on the 2nd day. (Nothing should be eaten or drank just like fasting.)

On the 2nd day, the hospital’s car will take our patients from the hotel and bring them to the clinic according to the time of the egg collection (OPU). The woman enters the egg collection process (OPU) under anesthesia at our hospital. Sperm sample is taken from her spouse. Then, through microinjection (ICSI) method, the egg and the sperm are brought together and the embryo is left to the development process.

Our patients will take a rest on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th days and wait for the development process of their embryos. Meanwhile, all embryos which show development in good quality on the 3rd embryo development day are applied biopsy through PGT method. Both chromosomal diseases and gender are determined for each embryo.

On the 7th day, the couple is transported by our hospital’s car to our hospital for embryo transfer in a timely manner. The patients are given information about the development, health and gender of the embryos and then the patient is expected to have a full bladder to be put into the transfer process. 2-3 embryos in good quality and in the desired gender are selected and the transfer is made to the woman accompanied by the ultrasound. After the transfer process, the patient rests in her room at the hospital for 2 hours and then taken back to hotel.

On the 8th day, the couple is taken to the airport according to their flight time by our car. During the whole treatment, flight tickets, transport and accommodation are provided by our hospital and the patients only need to concentrate on their treatment.

The Process Following Gender Selection

Bhcg hormone analysis is made in the blood 12 days after the embryo transfer because the process is made by IVF treatment. If the pregnancy test is positive, an examination date is given for the first control according to the pregnancy value. If the pregnancy test is negative, the medications are quitted and we will be waiting for the menstrual bleeding.

The woman should avoid heavy labor and sexual intercourse during these 12 days’ waiting time when pregnancy is expected.
