Sperm Donation

What is Sperm Donation?

Sperm donation or sperm transplantation is an IVF application which is made by using bank sperm (donor sperm) for a couple which cannot have a baby with their own sperm cells (in Azoospermic patients) or which has health risks to become pregnant (carrying a genetic or contagious disease).

Sperm donation is also a way of treatment which is frequently preferred by the single women who would like to get pregnant without a man or without getting married. The success rate in sperm donation varies based on the future mother’s age, egg reserves, quality of the embryos.

Today, there are ongoing stem cell studies for the sperm production for azoospermic patients. However, none of the countries have arrived the phase of implementation in treatment. Therefore, sperm donation treatment turns out to be the single alternative way of treatment in case no positive result is obtained after implementing sperm search techniques such as Micro-TESE, TESE, TESA, MESA, PESA.

When we consider the treated couples in general, they tread their path based on the result obtained after trying Micro-TESE, TESA and TESE for the last time at our center in Cyprus. If sperm cell is found during the treatment, normal IVF treatment is resumed and if no sperm cell is found the treatment can be adjusted as the sperm donation with the sperm sample selected from the bank.

Those who do not have healthy eggs can also consider egg donation.

Sperm donation treatment has been legally implemented in Cyprus for many years. The success rates, treatment costs, accommodation; transport, chance to have a holiday, the experience and the technology has made Cyprus a center of attraction for sperm donation treatment.

Particularly, the patients living in Turkey prefer to be treated in Cyprus because it does not require a passport to come to TRNC and because language is not an obstacle and most importantly because the treatment is much cheaper than European countries.

Sperm donation is the most frequently referred donation treatment after egg donation. You can learn your expected success rate in relation to your treatment from our success rates section.

The blood group compatibility and physical characteristics compatibility are obtained in line with the demands of the couples applying for the treatment and sperm is determined for the treatment. The sperms that are used for sperm donation are supplied from the sperm banks in the countries such as the United States and Denmark.

Treatment Process for Sperm Donation in Cyprus

In sperm donation, upon the completion of the woman’s pretreatment, the couple’s 1-week Cyprus trip is planned to start the treatment.

Usually nothing is made on the 1st day; the couple arrives at the airport and taken to the hotel to take a rest. The future mother is asked not eat and drink 6 hours before the egg collection process under anesthesia.

On the 2nd day, the hospital’s car will take our patients from the hotel and bring them to the clinic according to the time of the egg collection (OPU). The woman enters the egg collection process (OPU) under anesthesia at our hospital. The couple is asked about their choice in sperm donor and the bank sperm is determined. Then, fertility is made through microinjection and the IVF process starts.

Our patients will take a rest on the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th days and wait for the development process of their embryos.

On the 7th day, the couple is transported by our hospital’s car to our hospital for embryo transfer in a timely manner. The patients are given information about the development of the embryos and then the patient is expected to have a full bladder to be put into the transfer process. 2-3 embryos in good quality are selected and the transfer is made to the woman accompanied by the ultrasound. After the transfer process, the patient rests in her room at the hospital for 2 hours and then taken back to hotel.

On the 8th day, the couple is taken to the airport according to their flight time by our car. During the whole treatment, flight tickets, transport and accommodation are provided by our hospital and the patients only need to concentrate on their treatment.

The Process Following Sperm Donation

Sperm donation treatment is determined by Bhcg hormone analysis 12 days after the embryo. During this time, the woman should avoid heavy labor and sexual intercourse. If the pregnancy test is positive, the patient will continue as instructed and make an appointment with a gynecologist for the first ultrasound examination. If the pregnancy test is negative, the medications are quitted and we will be waiting for the menstrual bleeding.
